One time, I got sick and landed in the hospital.
There was this one particular nurse that just drove me crazy.
Every time she came in, she would talk to me like I was a little child.
She’d lean over with this big, exaggerated smile and say in a sing-song voice,
“Awww, how are we feeling today? Did we have a nice nap? Do we need to go potty?”
I was a grown man lying there in a hospital bed, not a toddler in daycare!
After three days of this, I’d had enough.
The next morning, she came in again, all cheerful and patronizing, and in her usual baby-talk voice, she asked,
“Aww, and how's our little tummy doing today?”
I looked her dead in the eyes and said, "Listen, sweetheart… I'm a grown adult. I don’t need to be spoken to like I’m in kindergarten. Just talk to me normally."
She gave me a mock gasp and said,
"Oh, I’m so sorry, sir! I didn’t realize you wanted to be treated like a big boy!"
Finally! I thought I got through to her.
Then, as she turned to leave, she patted me on the head and said,
"Good job using your words!"
