Two elderly women were out driving in a large car. Both could barely see over the dashboard. Cruising along, they came to an intersection. The stoplight was red, but they just went on through.
As they approached the next intersection, the light was red again. Still, they went on through without a second thought.
By now, they were nearing the third intersection, and the light was red once more. At this point, the passenger, who had been nervously gripping the armrest, said, "Mildred! That light is red again! Aren’t you supposed to stop?"
Mildred, the driver, just chuckled and replied, “Don’t worry, Edna. I’m pretty sure we’re fine. After all, we’ve passed at least three red lights, and no one’s pulled us over yet.”
As they approached a fourth intersection, the light was still red, but this time, they saw a police car parked by the side of the road. Edna nervously whispered, “Mildred, I think we’re in trouble.”
Mildred, unfazed, slowed down and rolled through the intersection, only to hear the police siren blare behind them.
She pulled over, and the officer walked up to the driver’s side window. He looked at the two elderly women and said, “Ladies, do you know why I stopped you?”
Mildred grinned and said, “I’m guessing it’s because we’ve been running red lights, officer?”
The officer raised an eyebrow. “That’s right, ma’am. You’ve run every light back there.”
Mildred paused for a moment, then replied, “Oh, don’t worry about it, officer. We’re just testing the system. You know, making sure the lights are still working!”
The officer couldn’t help but laugh. “Well, in that case, I guess I’d better give you a green light!”
Edna sighed in relief and said, “Mildred, I swear, you’re either the bravest driver I know or the luckiest. I’m leaning towards lucky.”
