In a small Italian town, hundreds of years ago, a small business owner owed a large sum of money to a loan shark.
The loan shark was a very old, unattractive-looking guy who just so happened to fancy the businessman’s beautiful daughter.
One day, the loan shark approached the struggling businessman with a "proposal."
Loan Shark: "Look, I know you can't pay me back. So, let's make a deal. I'll put two pebbles in this bag—one white and one black. If your daughter picks the white pebble, your debt is forgiven, and she goes free. If she picks the black pebble… well, she has to marry me."
The businessman and his daughter had no choice but to agree.
The loan shark bent down and slyly picked up two pebbles. But the daughter noticed something—he had grabbed two black pebbles!
She took a deep breath and thought quickly.
As the loan shark held out the bag, she reached in, pulled out a pebble… and "accidentally" dropped it on the ground, where it mixed with the other pebbles.
Daughter: "Oh no! Silly me! But it's okay! We can still tell which one I picked—just look at the one still in the bag!"
The loan shark's face turned pale as everyone looked inside the bag and saw the remaining black pebble.
Since logic dictated that the one she picked must have been white, the businessman’s debt was forgiven, and the daughter walked away without marrying the old creep!
Moral of the story? Sometimes, thinking outside the box… is the best way to get out of a tough situation!
