An elderly woman was looking for a pet to be a good companion and not much trouble. The pet store owner suggested a parrot, showed it to her and guaranteed her it would be a wonderful
companion.
Excited, the elderly woman purchased the parrot and brought it home. However, the next day, she returned to the pet store, looking annoyed.
"This parrot hasn't said a single word!" she complained.
"Hmm," said the store owner. "Maybe it needs a mirror. Parrots love to see themselves. It helps them talk."
So, she bought a mirror and took it home.
The next day, she was back again. "Still nothing," she grumbled.
"Well, perhaps a ladder," the store owner suggested. "Parrots love climbing. It keeps them happy and engaged."
So, she bought a ladder and took it home.
The following day, she stormed into the store, looking even more frustrated. "That bird is still silent!"
"Try a swing!" the owner advised. "Parrots enjoy swinging. It might make it feel comfortable enough to talk."
So, she bought a swing and took it home.
The next morning, she came in, looking heartbroken. "The parrot died," she said sadly.
Shocked, the pet store owner gasped. "Oh no! I’m so sorry! Did it ever say anything before it passed?"
The elderly woman sighed and nodded. "Yes. Right before it fell off the perch, it looked at me and said, ‘Don’t they sell food at that store?’"
